What is an ABN in Australia?
An ABN is a unique eleven-digit identifier issued to all entities registered in the Australian Business Register (ABR). The ABR explains that the eleven-digit ABN is structured as a nine-digit identifier with two leading check digits. The ABN is a public number; it does not replace your Tax File Number.
- Exactly eleven digits for the full identifier
- Generally one ABN per legal structure tracked on the ABR
- Shown on tax invoices and quotes when rules require identification
- Keep proof of registration where your team can quote it on invoices and supplier forms
Example
Your registration notice shows ABN 12 345 678 901. That string is what clients and the ATO expect when they verify your business through ABN Lookup.
