Tile ordering, grout, and how the math works
How much extra tile should I order for waste?
It depends on the layout pattern and how complicated the room is. Straight grids often start around 10% waste. Running bond and basketweave are a bit higher. Diagonal and herringbone layouts need more because of angled cuts. Our calculator applies your waste percentage first, then scales the ordered area by a simple, moderate, or complex room factor so you can match how you really install.
How are tile boxes calculated?
We divide the total square footage you need after waste and complexity by the coverage of one tile including the grout joint, round up to whole tiles, then divide by how many tiles come in each box and round up again. If you only enter a price per square foot, we estimate tile cost from the area with waste instead.
How does this calculator estimate grout bags?
We estimate the fraction of the wall or floor that is grout rather than tile, multiply by your joint depth, convert to an approximate weight using a standard grout density assumption, and divide into 25 pound bags. Always confirm against the grout manufacturer sheet for your exact product and joint size.
Sanded versus unsanded grout: how do I choose?
Narrow joints under one eighth inch usually call for unsanded grout, which is easier to work into tight spaces and is common on polished stone and glass. Wider joints benefit from sanded grout for strength. In showers and other wet areas, many pros also offer epoxy grout for maximum water and stain resistance.
